Five Boroughs, One City

Located within Roosevelt Island’s historic Smallpox Hospital, this adaptive reuse project transforms the landmark ruin into a contemporary youth hostel inspired by “Five Boroughs, One City.”

Modern steel and glass interventions preserve the existing stone structure, while subway-inspired circulation connects borough-themed accommodations and communal spaces, creating a dialogue between New York City’s past and present.

Shared 4-, 6-, and 8-bed rooms, private rooms, a gym and yoga area, an indoor garden, and a rooftop bar are organized along a central bridge that spans between the two stone wings.
